Background

Operation Thunderbolt, also known as the Entebbe Operation, was an army action conducted by the IDF in Uganda on Sunday, July 4, 1976.  This operation was initiated in order to save the lives of 105 Israeli passengers, as well as crew members of an Air France flight that was kidnapped by terrorists during a flight from Israel to France.  Despite the barricading of the kidnapped in a hostile country, the operation was a huge success and almost all of those kidnapped were returned to Israel safely.  During this operation Commander Yoni Netanyahu was killed, and the operation was renamed in his honor ‘Yonatan Operation”.
